  • To introduce students to informal email writing and informal email phrases

Procedure

Lead in (3-4 minutes) • To engage learners and activate their schemata and set the context of the class

T will ask ss to brainstorm the different situations in which people might want to send an email. I will show a picture to them. 1) "Why do you send emails? You have 2 minutes to talk to your peers." 2) ICQ them 3) Send them the link 4) OCFB

Layout (6-8 minutes) • To analyse and/or identify elements of layout that provide coherence and cohesion in the text

SS will be matching parts of the email to its main paragraph ideas/function (greeting, celebrating a birthday, farewell/wish lines). 1)"Please read this text and match the letters to the parts of the email (show it to them). You have 3 minutes. Do it individually" 2) ICQ them 3) Send them the link 4) Check answers 5) Feedback/CCQs

Formulaic Language (8-10 minutes) • To analyse and to identify language conventions in the text

SS will be choosing 3 correct answers in this exercise (meaning, appropriacy and form). 1) "Please choose 3 correct answers for each sentence or phrase (show it to them). You have 4 minutes. Do it individually." 2) ICQ them 3) Send them the link 4) Check answers 5) Feedback/CCQs

Parallel practice (5-6 minutes) • To practice the layout and conventions previously seen in writing

SS will fill in the gaps with the appropriate phrase in each different parts of this email. 1) "Please fill in the gaps (show it to them). You have 3 minutes. Do it individually." 2) ICQ them 3) Send them the link 4) Check answers 5) Feedback/CCQs

Freer writing (10-12 minutes) • To produce a similar text based on the sample for fluency purposes

Ss will write an email using a google doc. 1) "Write an informal email to a friend inviting him/her for something. Please use 3 phrases from the previous exercise. You have 10 minutes." (show google doc and explain it to them) 2) ICQ them 3) Send them the link 4) Monitor them for feedback

Publishing and feedback (5-5 minutes) • To allow learners to share their text and get feedback on the contents and language of their written production

1) Send ss the link to their emails 2) Students read each other's emails 3) T conducts feedback/DEC
