In this lesson, students will listen to a coversation for gist and specific information in the context of 'business'. Students will do role play as a speaking activity related to conversations and problems between the boss and officers.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listenin practice using a text about 'business'

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a role play in the context of relationship between a boss and an officer


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will be asked 'Have you ever worked with a bad tempered boss or manager?', 'Can you describe him?' Do you have any memories about him?' They will answer the questions as a whole class.

Pre-Listening (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Students will be showed a picture on the HO. Students will be asked 'What do you think about the picture?', 'Can you guess What they are talking about?'. Ss will discuss their ideas as in pairs and the teacher elicits the context.

Gist Listening (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening

Students will listen to the conversation and they will answer the questions in ex 3b in pairs. T. gets feedback from the students.

Detailed Listening (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening

Students will listen to the conversation again and answer the questions in ex. 3c in pairs. Students will find out who said the sentence in the conversation.

Speaking (10-15 minutes) • To provide students fluency speaking activity

Students will do role play. T. changes the pairs. T. gives the instructions about the context of the role play 'You are the boss and you are the officer, you have a problem. You will create a problem and play it with your pairs.' One student will be a boss or manager and the other one will be an officer who has some problems or may be he will apply for the job or have some problems with the other colleagues' T. gives some ideas and they will play their scnerios on the board with their partners. At the end of the play students will ask some questions about the play and some more questions like 'have you ever gossipped about your boss? '
