Description

In this lesson, students will be able to clarify and practice the use of articles in the context of trivias and general knowledge. After the lead-in, students will do a fill in the gap activity, to "test" their previous knowledge of the TL.Then, during the clarification, or teach stage, they will do a GD task to clarify MFP, just in time to realize another fill in the gap activity before the freer practice.

Main Aims

  • At the end of this lesson learners will have identified and practised the of use of indefinite, definite and zero articles in the context of Trivias and general knowledge

Subsidiary Aims

  • Learners will also have practiced speaking for fluency in a freer manner in the context of general knowledge and trivias

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will be presented with Jamboard and will have 2 minutes to write about their favourite landmarks in the world. 1 example will be done for them. Instructions: Here is the link, in the Jamboard, use the sticky notes to write about your favorite landmarks in the world. You have 2 minutes. CCQs: How many questions do you have to answer? - 1 What do you have to use to answer? - the sticky notes

Test #1 (4-5 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Students will have 2 minutes to do a fill in the gap exercise completing with articles 'a/an' and 'the', as well as the zero article. Then, in the breakout rooms they will compare answers before visual OCFB. Instructions: Complete the sentences with a/an, the or (-). you have 2 minutes. CCQs: What do you have to use to complete the sentences? - a/an, the or - how much time do you have? - 2 mins

Teach (5-8 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Here students will be given 4 minutes to analyze the language. They are all GD tasks in which they have to answer CCQs to check understanding, and then choose the correct alternative for F and P. They will do this in pairs in the breakout rooms before visual OCFB. Instructions: Now you are going to analyze some samples; In slide nº 2 you have to answer the questions with yes or no. Next, in slide nº 3 you have to select the correct alternative (a or b), and the same goes to slide no4. Please read the instructions carefully for each slide. If you have any questions click on the ask for help button and I will come to your breakout room and give you a hand with it. You have 4 minutes to do this task.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

This will be a fun trivia game. Students will be presented with 4 questions to quiz their general knowledge, but the main idea is for them to use the TL correctly. The text will be incomplete and they will be required to complete the sentences using the TL. They will do this separately and then compare answers before visual OCFB.

Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Here students will work in pairs and be presented with the maps of Mexico and Italy. They will have to talk as much as they can about these places and number as many facts as possible. An example will be modeled for them. The idea is that during FB stage they can compare their amount of facts and see which group knows more about them. Then, DEC will be conducted. Instructions: With your classmate, you will have at least 5 mins to say as many things as possible about these two countries (Italy and Mexico). The group that remembers the mayor number of facts at the end will win. Don't forget to keep count ! CCQs: Do you have to write or speak? what do you have to speak about? How much time do you have?
