Unit 7 - Modals and related verbs

Description

In this lesson,students will familiarize themselves with modal verbs,their uses and meanings,as well as related verbs and expressions

Main Aims

  • For the students to learn about modal verbs,how they're used and what they mean

Subsidiary Aims

  • For the students to be able to paraphrase around words and define them

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T engages Ss in a short discussion about the relationship between freedom and regulations/obligations in real life,as a way to ease into the concept of modal verbs.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

-T shows Ss a text in the context of a school assignment deadline. - After Ss read the text,T asks a few gist questions,then switches over to target language (modals).

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

- T chooses some marker sentences as models to do MPF on the target language with Ss

Controlled Practice (10-15 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

- T starts some CP activities to confirm the students' understanding of modal verbs.First underlining,then matching,then gap filling

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

-T does a bit of scaffolding with Ss to prepare them for the following activity - T asks students with making sentences using modal verbs,in the positive and negative form.

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

- T asks Ss : "do you believe that true/absolute freedom exists in our world? Why/why not?.." - T is monitoring and regulating
