Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, the students will have learnt and practice the first modal auxiliary verbs (will, won't, might, might not). All this in the context of going on a safari

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice speaking and to allow the student to make sentences using the modal auxiliary verbs ( will, won't , might, might not). All this in the context of going on a safari

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T-Ss: I will go on safari in Africa

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T-Ss: shows slide (2) I know that it will (elicit hot), CCQ, drill, written form and stress T-Ss: shows (3) : It won't (elicit snow), CCQ, drill , written form and stress T-Ss: shows slide (4): it might (elicit rain), CCQ, drill , written form and stress

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T-Ss: shows slide (5) with scale of what will happen (100%), what won't happen (0%) and what might happen. T-Ss: asks Ss to place will, won't and might on the scale Ss-T: place the modals on the scale T-Ss: shows slide (6): with snow, sun and rain placed on the scale accordingly

Clarification (5-7 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T-Ss: shows slide (7). explains the structure of the sentence. T-Ss: asks the Ss to repeat with different pronouns. clarifies the short form ('ll and won't) Ss-T-Ss: repeat and practice

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T-Ss: shows slide (8) explains these are warning before going on safari. T-Ss: asks students to complete in pairs S-S: Ss work in pairs (T monitors) Ss-T-Ss: check answers together

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T-Ss: shows slide (10): asks students to complete sentences alons S- Ss work alone Ss-T-Ss: check answers together

Free Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T-Ss: shows slide (12) asks student to write sentences in pairs about what will/ won't/might happen on safari. T-Ss: shows examples S-S: Ss work together (T monitors) Ss-T-Ss: discuss answers

Feedback on language (4-5 minutes) • to go over good language and correct errors

T-ss: shows student good language examples and sentences with errors. Asks them to correct them. S-S: correct in pairs Ss-T-Ss: discuss sentences together
