Unit 9A: All in a days work: Listening
Elementary level


In this lesson, students will practice listening and grammar, review the simple present and begin present continuous in the context of "the meeting." Students will warm up by talking about images of business persons that leads into learning vocabulary. Following this are two listening activities: one with simple present (gist) and the other with present continuous (detail). Next is a clarification of present continuous grammar including MFP, followed by a concept checking activitiy (gap fill) and another listening exercise to check answers. Finally, students will have controlled and semi controlled speaking practice with the TL.

Main Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about people in the context of work

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of the present continuous in the context of work and business meetings


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Take a look at the picture on the HO. Who are these people? What's his/her job? What do you see? What things are there? Talk with your partners about it.

Pre-teaching vocab (3-5 minutes) • to clarify vocab that is essential for the listening activity.

Give instructions for Ss to match vocab to pictures. Work individ. Check in pairs. Get FB. Clarify meaning if necessary, esp meeting and conference.

First listening Task (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

First listen about Frank. What's his problem? Have Ss look at Ex. 3. Briefly skim the questions. Listen to R9.1 and circle the answer. New partners. Check in pairs. Get FB. T highlights the verbs in the examples.

Second Listening Task (6-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Listen for who is speaking. S write Frank, Janet or Liz next to appropriate sentences on HO. Ss check in pairs. T gets FB. Play ex again if necessary. Highlight verbs from examples.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

WRITE on WB: I teach at ITI. (generally/usually) I am teaching at ITI. (right now/this minute) Show Overhead of EX 5. Form: sub + be + verb + ing +object. For negative: Sub +be + not+ veb + ing +object. Play--playing, smoke-smoking, etc. Work with partner to complete. Do pos and neg. Get FB. Clarify problem areas. Pronunciation drill.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss work individually on Ex 7. Check with partner. Get FB/ clarify prob areas.

Role Play (8-10 minutes) • To practice using the TL in a role playing situation

Ss work in pairs reading and saying their lines. Ask for volunteers to act in front of class.

Error Correction (2-3 minutes) • To highlight and clarify common problems with the TL

T has taken mental notes during monitoring....says "I heard some ss said this, " or I heard ...... a lot" Make corrections in meaning, form and/or pronunciation.
