Materials

Abc English File, Student e-Book 4th Edition; Intermediate level

Main Aims

  • This lesson aims to help students learn which quantifiers to use with which type of noun (countablevs uncountable; plural vs singular)

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a daily conversations in the context of in the context of shopping, sale, and expressing thoughts and opinions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Present a funny meme that highlights the lesson topic; ask the students if they can guess what it might be about (A man throwing money around him using all quantifiers in one sentence to describe money but definitely never the word "enough")

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Since our unit is about digital world and technology detox, I will introduce some pictures about social media and ask students how much time do they spend on FB, insagram, gaming and so on; students will probably use (much, a lot of, many etc..) to express their opinions and describe their activities thus will generate some interest in the lesson topic.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-I will be showing the students different pictures about countable and uncountable nouns to elicit from them the exact words related to quantity, number, or amount -Student need to describe the number/quantity of the item in the pictures and answer whether it is a lot of or little; many, much or a few/ I will apply ECDWS to enhance meaning, form and pronunciation of quantifiers; students need to drill the pronunciation of each word and read the rules related to the nouns, that we will be having at the end of each slide.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Task 1: Students will read a set of sentences and fill their gaps using guessing. Task2: Students will listen this time to the audio and fill the missing gaps. (they need to identify which quantifiers go with the specific nouns) (Individual) Later they need to compare their work among each other. (group work)

Semi-Controlled Practice (3-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Students need to do some filling gaps activity in which they will have the option to underline the correct answer; this exercice will help them to reinforce the use of quantifiers in relation to countable and uncountable nouns

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will divide the students into groups: one will have to do a dialogue/roleplay in which they play a customer and a shop assistant in a market; they are required to use the quantifiers learned in today's lesson 2nd: They have to describe what they can see in a picture (a fridge full of labeled different items)
