Main Aims

  • To provide students with practice of the 1st and 2nd conditionals in the context of completing supplemental questions for two job announcements.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with productive skills practice through completing the task in pairs/groups.


1. Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I'll start by asking the students how many are working during the pandemic, and tell them I've been looking for a job. I'll have them read two job announcements that I found (1. Activity 1: Job Announcements), and tell them that I think they should apply. We'll then complete 1. Activity 2: Matching Definitions to clarify possible language students may not know.

2. Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

I'll tell students that they will be tasked with answering supplemental questions for the two job applications in pairs/groups. I'll have students read the example I wrote (2. Activity 3: Examples) for a model of the task and then will highlight some of the useful language in Google Slides

3. Task (10-11 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

In their pairs/groups, students will discuss and write their answers to the supplemental questions (3. Task 1: Supplemental Questions) for the job announcements.

4. Planning (4-5 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to plan students' reports

Students will pick amongst their pairs/groups, which job they want to apply for and prepare to present orally to the class.

5. Report (6-8 minutes) • To allow students to report on how they did the task and how it went

Pairs/groups of students will present orally to the class which job they're going to apply for and read their supplemental question answers (3. Task 1) to the class. I'll make the text available to students to read on the screen as the students are presenting.

6. Language Analysis (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

I'll provide a Google Slides presentation to cover the MFPA of the task language with students, eliciting their understanding of the language.

7. Language Practice (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the task language

I'll give students 7. Task 2: Practice to complete in Google Forms.

7a. OCFB (3-4 minutes) • To allow students to get answers to task 7. Task 2

After completing 7. Task 2 the students and I will go over the answers to the exercise and do additional analysis on any language points they might still be struggling with.
