TP4 Function - Giving Opinion
Upper Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students are introduced to functional language for giving opinions, and provided with opportunities to practise related phrases. The Target Language is drawn from a recording of three conversations on contentious topics, which the learners listen to first. They practise with this text before trying to apply their understanding to their own examples and discussion.

Materials

Abc TP4: a) Recording 2.7
Abc TP4: b) Giving Opinions PPT

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of functional language for giving opinion.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practise listening skills in the context of everyday conversation.
  • To practise speaking skills and fluency with the TL.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To listen for gist and general understanding of topic and TL

Instruction: Listen to these 3 recorded conversations. Learner-centered discussion of topic about which person agrees with the statements above, the man or the woman? (Audio 2.7 and Ex 2A).

Clarification MFPA (5 minutes) • To clarify the TL meaning, form and pronunciation

Learners attempt to separate TL into Agree or Disagree (Giving Opinions PPT Slide 1 & 2) in OCFB. T comments on Meaning, Appropriacy (formal, neutral or informal), Form (chunks and patterns of the language) and Pronunciation of the functional exponents.

Presentation through the text (8 minutes) • To provide Ss with practice in identifying the TL ahead of productive tasks

Intensive task: Breakout rooms (5 mins). Learners listen to the audio again, and complete 6 question quiz on missing words on a) giving opinion, b) agreeing, c) partially agreeing, and d) disagreeing. Working individually, and then in pairs to compare answers.

Controlled Practice (CP) (5 minutes) • For learners to focus on the accuracy of the TL

Breakout room for 2 mins. Learners create a sentence on 1 of the 3 topics in the text (Limiting violence in computer games / Downloading music for free / Having cosmetic surgery). T conducts OCFB, reviewing pronunciations.

Free Practice (FP) (8 minutes) • For learners to use the TL for fluency in productive skills (speaking)

Communicative task. Instruction: "Choose ONE of these topics. Tell your partner whether you agree or disagree. Use different language to the last discussion. You have 4 minutes." (Google slides with instructions, TL and suggested topics). Breakout rooms (4 mins). T conducts OCFB (4 mins).

Feedback and DEC (5-8 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

T reviews 3 recurrent errors made in SS, as noted during the lesson.
