Grammar: the rules of comma use
Intermediate class level

Description

In this class students are required to improve their punctuation skills by first, reviewing the comma; understanding its features, rules and use. Students will learn the different grammatical conditions and contexts in which the use of a comma is a must.

Materials

Abc English File, Student e-Book 4th Edition; Intermediate level

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification about comma usage and rules; students are required to demonstrate their understanding in different practices

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of the comma and its rules in real context; to show awarness and understading in applying these rules in writing

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I- Set the students into the lesson context to generate their interest in the topic: 1-Show some pictures that have funny quotes and memes about punctuation: 2- Ask the students to guess what it might be about (to expose them to the lesson) 3- Give them some funny sentences that they are not punctuated and ask them to punctuate them

Test #1 (4-6 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

II- To understand students' level regarding puctuation and more specifically comma usage 1- Give them a diagnostic test to test their inderstanding about comma's rules: they need to puncuate properly a set of different sentences by adding commas, wherver is needed. (Notice that this task is set for the teacher to understand students' background regarding the topic, therofore there will be no answer key nor a correction for this, for students)

Teach (5-9 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

III- I will clarify the lesson's topic to help students to undertand comma's usage and rules: 1- Present all the different rules in the presentation; I might ask students to read some example and go quickly through the slides. Rule1: learn about commas used in saluations; cities and states; dates and places; direct speech Rule2: to separate a list of words, verbs, adjectives or even phrases Rule3: used before the FANBOYS Rule4: before introductory phrases Rule5: before non essential words and modifiers

Test #2 (5-8 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

IV: Controlled practice: to check out students' understanding in regard to the first test. I wil give them a set of sentences and ask them to add commas wherver is needed. Free practice (4-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

VI- Ask the students to write sentences using commas in different positions speaking about digital age and technology (hobbies, games, music, )
