Description

In this lesson students learn about gerunds vs. Infinitives in the context of celebrity life using SB pg. 88.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of Gerunds vs. Infinitives in the context of Celebrity life

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of Sentences in the context of Using gerunds and infinitives properly to describe a celebrity's life

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Using TP3 Leadin Slide, show celebrity quotes and ask which one the students like most.

Exposure (2-2 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Using TP3 leadin Slide, ask students Re-read the celebrity quotes and ask students to identify the target language that is underlined in the chat.

Clarification (15-16 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Send link of TP3 MFPA Form In chat for students to open and complete individually. Say: You will have 12 minutes to complete the Form link in the chat looking at the Meaning and Form of gerunds vs. Infinitives. Open the link now and complete the form clicking submit at the end to submit your answers. Send students in breakout rooms to check answers. Say: You will have 2 minutes in the breakout rooms to check your answers to the Form you just completed. Bring students back to elicit class feedback and ask CCQs to check understanding of MFPA.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Send link of TP3 Controlled Practice Form in the chat. Say: Now that we know the difference between gerunds and infinitives, let's practice using them correctly in sentences. Open the link in the chat for the Controlled Practice Quiz. You will have 8 minutes to complete the quiz. When you are done please give me a thumbs up from the reactions in Zoom. Bring students back and elicit class feedback. Ask if There were any questions that gave them trouble.

Free Practice (11-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Send link to TP3 Free Practice Form. Say: In pairs in breakout rooms I want you to look at the pictures of celebrities and come up with 1 or 2 sentences about each celebrity together, properly using a gerund or Infinitive to describe something about each celebrity's life. The sentences can be real or made Up but each sentence needs to properly use a gerund or an infinitive. You can use our previous activities to help get you started. You will have 10 minutes To work on this and I will be popping into the rooms to listen and help if needed. Bring students back for DLF

Delayed Language Feedback (5-6 minutes) • To clarify the use of the target language highlighting what was done well and what needs improvement

Using whiteboard on Zoom, write sentences where target language was used well and sentences that need improvement. Ask students to correct the sentences that need improvement.
