Main Aims

  • To introduce and practice collocations about personal characteristics.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice fluency for speaking in the post-task discussion about which job best matches their personal characteristics.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- T displays photos of people who have different jobs and elicits from them: What do the people in the photos do? Do you think you can do these jobs well? Why? - Ss discuss in the breakout rooms.

Text Work (Gist + Intensive Task) (8-10 minutes) • To get students “identify” and notice the target language.

- T asks ss to read the texts quickly. - T asks Ss to match the jobs with the texts on google form individually and compare the answers with the groupmates in the breakout rooms. - T asks Ss to share their answers. - Ss justify their answers by noticing the description and adjectives used to describe the jobs.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T elicits vocabulary using pictures and CCQs. Then, T asks the ss to choose the correct form of the words through Google form. T models the pronunciation and drills with the ss. (1) sympathetic (adj) used to describe someone who shows, especially by what they say, that they understand and care about someone else's suffering. - If you are sympathetic, will you think of others' feelings? - Rylee always donates money to support the poor families, is she a sympathetic person? (2) naturally talented (adv & adj) an inborn ability to be good at something - If you are naturally talented, are you born with talent? - If you are naturally talented, will you more easily become successful? (3) totally committed (adv & adj) having promised to be involved in a plan of action - If someone is totally committed to something, will he/she be lazy? - If someone is totally committed to being a musician, will he/she do your best in every performance? (4) honest (adj) telling the truth or able to be trusted - If someone is honest, will he/she lie? - If someone is honest, will you believe in him/her?

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

- Ss choose the correct descriptions for the famous people on the google form individually. - Ss discuss their answers in the breakout rooms.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

- T demonstrates the discussion by sharing the personal characteristics needed to be a good teacher. - Ss get in groups of 3 and talk about which job best matches their personal characteristics. E.g. What is your personal characteristics? Which job best matches your personal characteristics? If you already have a job that matches your personal characteristics, do you like it?
