Iceland, Receptive Skills: Reading
Upper-Intermediate level

In this lesson, learners will discover all about Iceland and its natural wonders. It will start off with a little guess where I am game, and clues give to learners until they can guess my location (Iceland). They will then be introduced to the text and have a reading for gist activity, where they will have to write a five word summary of the text. Then, they will look at the TL from the text and after guided discovery of MTPA, they will do some controlled practice before reading the article for details and work together to decide if some statements or true or false. Finally, after feedback, in the freer task, they will create a pitch to entice Mexicans to visit Iceland.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about reading opportunities in the context of Iceland and its natural beauty.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of vocabulary related travel.

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The class will start off with a where am I activity, where they will be given clues, and have to guess where I am. Then, a very short slide show where some of the images will be discussed. (slides 1-2).

Reading for Gist (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language and practice reading for gist.

Learners will be introduced to the text and be given 2 minutes to read it. After they will work in small groups and write a 5 word summary of the text together. They will have an opportunity to share and explain their summaries too. (Slides 3-4)

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

TL will be introduced. I will start off explaining it and have all MFPA on the slide, but it will be all mixed up, after pretending it was a huge error, I will ask learners to work in teams and fix the information on the slide so all the MFP are with the correct words. After, feedback will be given. (Slide 5)

Controlled Practice and Reading for Details (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice and to work on reading for details

After confirming MFPA with the group, they will work on two group activities. The first will be a controlled practice with the TL. Then, they will work on a reading for details activity. They will be given time to reread the article and then work together to decide if the statements are true, false, or if it isn't mentioned in the text. Finally, feedback will be given to the group. (Slides 6-7)

Free Practice (14-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Learners will now work in groups. They will have 6 minutes to present a 2-minute pitch all about Iceland. The idea of the pitch is to encourage Mexicans to visit on their vacations. They can make it funny or interesting. they will be given some ideas of what to include and some modeling beforehand. They have the option of making a presentation or any other way they would like to present their pitch. After feedback, and DEC will be offered.
