Subsidiary Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of speaking for fluency in the context of asking for personal information on a first date.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher will screen share and read the two questions on the google slide. The teacher will then ask the students to type their answers into the public chat box. As the students are typing the teacher will read aloud the students answers.

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

The teacher will screen share slide 2 and ask Gonzalo to roll play with the teacher. The teacher will ask the students to pay attention to the girls answers. The teacher will then screen share slide 4 and we will then read the script. The teacher will then ask the students to type to a partner: what information did we find out about the girl? The teacher will give them 1.5 minutes to do this in pairs through the private chat. The teacher will then nominate students to say which information they found out about the girl. The teacher will then ask the students: Were the boy and girl talking about personal information? The students will answer yes, hopefully.

Useful Language (5-7 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

The teacher will screen share the google form and give a demo with the first two questions. The teacher will then share the link the google document using the public chat box. The students will have 1.5 minutes to complete the activity. The teacher will then screen share and go over the results. The teacher will then screen share slide 7. The teacher will read the girl's sentence "My favorite type of music is salsa." The teacher will then ask the students to type into the public chat box the answer to: What question was the girl asked? The teacher will then read the correct question. The teacher will then ask them to type into the public chat box the answer to : What are some types of music? The teacher will then screen share slide 8 and elicit : What type of word is "music" and "salsa" in the sentence "My favorite type of music is salsa" ? Nouns. The teacher will screen share slide 9, read the sentence, and ask the student where the linking is in the sentence. The teacher will then mark where the linking is by screen sharing slide 10. The teacher will ask the students to say the sentence after the teacher, then will nominate a student to say the sentence. If the students don't get the stressing right, the teacher will screen share slide 11 and elicit where the stress is. The teacher will repeat this pattern for slides 12 through 21.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

The teacher will screen share slide 22 and give instructions with a short demo. The teacher will split the student up into breakout rooms in pairs. One student will be the girl the other will be the boy in the picture. They will practice using the target language for 5 to 6 minutes, then groups will change. We will change partners until the last 6 minutes of class.

Feedback and Error Correction (5-6 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

The last 5 to 6 minutes of class will be reserved for going over good language and language which could use reformulating. I will have typed in some examples of good language language which needs reformulating. The teacher and students will reformulate the language together.
