Description

In this lesson, students will review and revise the use of infinitives and gerunds through a guided discovery task in the context of fame and fortune. Students will do controlled and freer practice at the end.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide review, practice and clarification of gerunds and infinitives in the context of fame and fortune.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a short discussion while using gerunds and infinitives.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T greets Ss and the lesson starts. T introduces today’s lesson by showing the quotations and the pictures. T asks Ss if they recognise these famous people. Then T asks Ss to skim the texts for 30’’ to see if Ss understand the quotations and gives extra help with the words prevent, recognise, achieve, and immortality. T sends Ss to Break Out Rooms in groups or pairs to exchange views about these quotations for 3’ (extra help with the words previously mentioned in ‘slide’ 2). T monitors the procedure.

Exposure (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T shares the whiteboard and writes Woody Allen’s quote. T demonstrates the task by underlying the infinitives and the gerunds in this quotation. T shows the Google Form and the task to be done. Then Ss proceed to complete the intensive reading task Google Form and identify the infinitives and the gerunds in the quotations for 3’. When Ss are done, T shows the results.

Clarification (12-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T shows the next task where Ss should identify the correct pattern. T demonstrates an example (using Woody Allen's quotation again on the whiteboard) and Ss proceed with the task for 1’. T then shows the results and proceeds with the clarification. T analyses the Form, the Meaning and the Appropriacy with the help of the Presentation. T asks relevant CCQs during this procedure. Finally, T reads some sentences in a natural way and Ss repeat -in order to practise sentence stress- chorally and individually using the slides n.3 - n. 8 (limit the number of sentences depending on the time) of the presentation.

Controlled Practice (6-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T shows the next task and explains how it is done. Ss do this task individually for 3’. Ss then compare their choices via private messages on the chat box for 2’. Finally T provides Open Classroom Feedback.

Free Practice (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T says to Ss that they should go to Break Out Rooms and discuss some questions for 4’-5' (T sends the link for the Google doc before Ss go to Break Out Rooms). T monitors the procedure. When time is up, T provides Open Classroom Feedback and DEC.
