Description

In this lesson, students will practice their reading skills for gist, specific and detailed information in the context of 'Voluntourism' a potentially new word that we will explore in the context of a text with two differing opinions on the subject. Once they have read and understood the text through controlled practice they will get a chance to discuss their own views.

Main Aims

  • To advance students reading skills through gist and scanning in the context of differing opinions related to 'volumtourism.'

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will be able to practice speaking by sharing their ideas and opinions of 'volunteerism.'

Procedure

Lead in/Gist task (7-11 minutes) • To set lesson context, engage students and introduce the reading material

T greets Ss T shares screen T shows the pictures on the screen and introduces the word 'voluntourism' T asks the questions -What do you think it is -Why do you think that there are arguments for and against it? T shows then that they can scroll and see the text T gives instructions -I will put you in Break out rooms -Discuss with a partner the questions for 2 minutes -read the article quickly, you are looking to see if your ideas match or maybe you discover that it is something else -when you are done reading discuss the questions at the bottom of the page with your partner -I will send the link in the chat T shares that this link will be the same for all of our tasks today so don't close out when you are done - You will have 8 minutes for the whole task T monitors and is available for questions in break out rooms. T brings Ss back and points to things that were noticed while observing

Language Clarification (5-8 minutes) • To share blocking language with students so that the text will be more accessabile.

T shares screen after bringing Ss back from the previous task T Points out how to get to the next task on the google sites activity created T explains task -You will do this alone -it is the same link -You will have 5 minutes for this task -please submit when you're done T demos task and does the first one of each style with the Ss CCQ's How much time do we have for this task? 5 min T confirms access to the link T monitors as Ss work on the form T looks over answers in forms to see what they got T goes over any of the answers that were incorrect

While-Reading # 1 and 2 (15-18 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

T shares screen T shows the tabs at the top T asks them to look at the previous screen and shows them how they can check their own answers T gives instructions -The next two tasks will be done in your break out rooms -You will have 15 minutes for these tasks -I will be monitoring and there to answer any questions -please ask for me if you need help T goes over the first task -You will be reading the text again looking for specific information about how Leo and Martha feel about their experiences and why -After you are done reading you will answer the T/F questions T gives demo -Work with your partner to answer the questions -check your answers -If there are any that are wrong, go and read it again and try to find out the right answer T shares the next screen T gives a demo and asks the Ss to answer the first one T shows how there will be one answer per line CCQ's Do we check our answers after we submit them? yes What do we do if we get a wrong answer? discuss it with your partner and look for the right answer Are we doing both tasks in the break out rooms? yes How much time do we have? 15 min Any questions? Confirm link T send Ss to break out rooms T checks that there are no issues with the rooms T monitors rooms and checks for answers to the quizzes T brings back Ss and addresses any issues that were not addressed in the rooms

Post-Reading (5-6 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T sets up the next task -with a partner discuss what you think Are these programs beneficial? Do you know of any in your countries? Have you ever volunteered in another country or your own? -In break out rooms -5 min

DEC (2-2 minutes) • Point out positive and correctable uses of the language rounding out the lesson

T brings Ss back T has created lexis or concept items to address for positive feedback or correction T has typed these up on a word doc while Ss were in post-task T thanks Ss for their time
