Description

In this lesson students learn about the second conditional through guided discovery based on a reading text about how British people behave in different situations. This is followed by language clarification, then controlled practice - complete using the correct form of the verb. Finally, there is a freer practice- under what circumstances would you.........

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of "Hypothetical If" in the context of magazine article

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in the context of hypothetical situations

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show Ss a picture representing the idiom "Money doesn't grow on trees" Ask students what would happen if money grew on trees.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Pre- teach the new vocabulary through a matching exercise. Students to read the text and do a "Complete the sentences exercise" related to the text. Discuss what would happen differently in Egypt?

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Highlight the use of "would" in the text.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Clarify the meaning through CCQs Are these real / imaginary situations? Can they happen in the present? Can they happen in the future? Clarify the form through a guided discovery exercise. Model and drill the rising/falling intonation and the pronunciation of I'd.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss are instructed to answer exercise 1 p 79 in pairs then double check with the model answer. Whole class feedback followed in which teacher elicits corrections to the mistakes .

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss are instructed to do Ex 2 p97 in pairs. Then, report to the class. Whole class feedback followed by a delayed correction in which teacher elicits corrections to the mistakes heard during the speaking .
