Description

In this lesson, students learn about age, its limits and its effects on different people through a guided discovery based on answering certain questions to engage students. This is followed by a task in which students will discuss age limits to be followed by a reading text about a certain character which will later lead to a listening between the character in question and her partner. This activity will then be followed by group work where students will discuss various issues about age. In this case they will be practicing productive skills of speaking.

Main Aims

  • The main aim of this lesson is reading which students will practice as a receptive skill in the context of age.

Subsidiary Aims

  • This lesson has two sub aims, listening and speaking.

Procedure

Warmer lead in. (3-5 minutes) • To generate students interest in the lesson.

Teacher will start by welcoming students for the lesson. Students will be asked if its easy to tell some ones age by just looking at them and then a picture of a woman will be displayed on the white board. Teacher will ask students how old they think the woman is and after their guesses they will be asked for clues in the picture which have helped them to guess her age.

Pre-teaching vocabulary/ Pre-reading. (5-10 minutes) • To convey meaning of the words in the target language to students.

Basing on students clues, I will introduce new words on the picture and about the topic and try to elicit their meanings from the students. Students will be asked for the age required for starting to teach in Turkey and the retirement age, the teacher will use their examples to introduce the word age limit which will not be given to them directly but rather elicited from them. Exercise 1 will be given to the students in pairs to discuss if they think there should be age limits for the activities on the exercise. Whole class feed back will be done and students will be asked again to discuss in order to find out if there are any other activities which have age limits.

while Reading (3-7 minutes) • Aimed at checking more detailed understanding of the text

Students will be focused on the woman's photo again and the teacher will move around showing them a text written by her, I will tell them that they are going to read it and answer question two by circling the correct statement individually. Students will then check in pairs to compare their answers with their partners and after whole class feed back will be done before moving to another stage.

Post- reading (3-7 minutes) • Creating more awareness about the target language through practicing the productive skills of reading and writing.

Students will be asked how they think the man will react when the woman tells him the truth. Instructions will be given, teacher will tell the students that they are going to imagine the conversation between the woman and her partner when she tells him the truth, they will be grouped again and set on task ( practicing the productive skill of writing) to write down their ideas. Students from two different groups will be chosen to read out their conversations. The recording 3.12 will be played to compare the students ideas with the conversation. Students will be asked what they would do if they were in the writers position. Teacher will move to the last activity.

Extra activity. (3-5 minutes) • To highlight the previous conversation.

Students will be grouped and tasked to discuss the questions in exercise four giving as much detail as possible about any situations they are familiar with or experiences they have had. If time, they will share their opinions with the class and then the lesson will closed.
