Description

In this session Ss are going to be taught the grammar on conditional sentences type 1, in a guided discovery practice.

Materials

Abc Handout of the book
Abc Handout of the workbook,

Main Aims

  • To provide the students with the MFP of the conditional type 1 (grammar), and more conjunctions used in this form

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide Ss with a speaking freer practice in order to check their fluency and have double feedback

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T asks the Ss to remember what their listening was about. They discuss it WC to give some ideas.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Now, T set the instructions and gives the handout to the Ss, wants them to do exercise one on page 91, first individually, then check their answers with pairs. While Ss are busy with the exercise, T will write the sentences on the board with gaps (T omits the conjunctions). T checks the answers WC.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T asks the Ss to turn over their handouts and try to remember the conjunctions to complete the sentences with their partners. Then T checks the answers and complete the sentences WC. T writes the answrs in another color to highlight what the focus of the lesson is on.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T gets Ss's attention on the conjunctions and uses CCQs to check the meaning. T asks Ss questions to elicit the form from them, and finally uses back chain drilling to check the pronunciation.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T gives Ss another handout from the workbook which is a matching practice and controlled. Ss first do it individually, then check it with their partners and then they check it with T.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T sets the instructions for exercise 2, on page 91 and gets the Ss do it TPS.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

As for a freer practice on the TL, T gets the Ss do do the speaking exercise on page 91, in groups. After that T writes some the grammatical or pronunciation mistakes Ss made during the activity. If there is enough time left T gets Ss to correct the mistake in pairs first and report to the class, if not T does the error correction Wc.
