Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of the first conditional and alterntives to if ( unless, as soon as, before, after, when).

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice speaking and to allow the student to make sentences using the first conditional.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T-Ss: greets Ss and asks what is in the picture Ss- T answer sun beach, rain, sun. T asks if one is connected to the other. Ss- T: answer yes, no, depends. T-Ss: T tries to elicit the sentence " if it doesn't rain, I'll go to the beach" Ss-T: guess the sentence or are very close T-Ss: repeats the sentence and emphasizes that one depends on the other (If.... I will)

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a situation

T-Ss: stays on slide 1 and asks CCQ Questions. T-Ss: Where am I going? ( the beach) Will I go to the beach if it rains? (No) Am I going to the beach 100%? ( No) Probably? ( Yes) Does one depend on the other? Yes

Highlighting (4-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T-Ss: drills the sentence, asking them all to repeat in parts (, beach, go to the beach, i'll go to the beach, I'll go to the beach if it doesn't rain). Ss- T: repeat with T several times. T-Ss: shows slide (2) with the sentence written, explains the form. T-Ss: repeats the sentence while emphasizing the stress T-Ss: asks Ss to repeat with the correct stress Ss-T: Ss repeat, stressing (doesn't and go)

Clarification (4-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T-Ss: shows slide (3) with alternatives to "if". T-Ss: explains when one would use each word. T-Ss: asks Ss to repeat and asks CCQ questions to see they understand the difference

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T-Ss: shows slide (4) and asks them to work in pairs Ss-T-Ss: check answers together T-Ss: T shows answer key

Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check further

T-Ss: shows Ss slide (6) asks them to work alone and circle the correct answer. Ss-T-Ss: check answers together T-Ss: shows answer key

Free Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T-Ss: shows slide (9) and explains they will work in pairs. Each will choose a question to answer and will present it to the group. S-S: work in pairs in breakout rooms Ss-T: present what their partner said

Listening ( flexi stage) (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through an excersice.

T-Ss: shows Ss the questions and asks to listen and fill in. S: work alone and fill in the sentences,. Ss-T-Ss: check the answers together T-Ss: shoes answer key
