Description

In this lesson, students will learn vocabulary related to places: natural and man-made.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of place names in the context of traveling and to provide practice recalling vocabulary

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of travel

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Show Ss photos of close-ups of sand, water, a flower etc (items from different places). -Ss look at the photos and guess the topic. -Elicit what the photos are and what the items have in common

Exposure (4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

-Ss read a few sentences. -T asks what places are in the sentences.

Highlighting (1 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

-Circle the places on the screen after students have named the places

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-Present photos to Ss -Ss call out the name of the place -Ask CCQ's about the words -Reveal written form -Drill pronunciation and stress

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-Present matching and spelling activity -Demonstrate how to do the first one. -Ss work independently. -Ss discuss answers in pairs -FB: Review answers and correct errors

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

-Ss complete a gap fill independently, then review answers in pairs. -FB: Review answers and correct any misconceptions about meanings.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-Ss choose a travel pack and discuss their choice in pairs. -FB: T asks students why they chose their particular pack.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • Students correct their own errors

-Monitor and take notes while Ss are in the break out rooms. -After freer practice, write incorrect and correct sentences on the board. -As a whole group, elicit what the errors are why.
