Description

In this lesson, students will practice vocabulary about describing the texture or taste of food. They will follow this with a reading activity in the context of 'a bad childhood experience'.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice with reading for gist and detail in the context of 'a bad childhood experience'

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of adjectives in the context of describing the taste and texture of food

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T. asks ' Did you have a snack last night?' , 'What do you usually eat while you are watching a movie?', 'How does it taste?' ss will talk about food.

Vocabulary (10-15 minutes) • To prepare students for the vocabulary and make it accessible

T. shows some pictures and elicits the meaning of words (in Unit 5- ex: 1-2-3) T. elicits the 'texture' and 'taste', writes them on the board elicits the vocabulary by using CCQ's. T. sticks the words on the board. Students will come to the board as a whole class and put the words on the board according the cathegories of 'texture' and 'taste' Students will practice the pronunciation of these words. Ss will work in pairs and discuss the taste and texture of their favourite food by using the vocabulary.

Pre-Reading (2-4 minutes) • To prepare the students for the text and make it accessible

T. asks ' Did your mother force ou to eat something that you didin't like when you were a child?', 'What was that? 'How does it taste?'. T. elicits the context of the texts.

Gist Reading (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading.

T. gives HO's. T. makes the students read the text for gist. They will work in pairs and answer the questions in ex. 1.

Detailed Reading (4-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading

Ss will read the text again for the specific information. They will work in pairs and answer the questions in ex 2.

Post Reading (5-8 minutes) • To provide the students practice semi-controlled speaking about the topic

Ss will work in pairs and discuss the taste and texture of their favourite food and a food or dish they can't stand.
