Description

In this lesson, students will talk about previous personal experiences using the past simple tense.

Main Aims

  • To practice simple past w/ regular verbs in the context of past life experiences.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To correctly pronounce regular verbs in the past simple tense.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Greet Ss. Present a photo of a well known university in Istanbul. Ask Ss what university it is and if they know anyone who went there. -Ask Ss where they studied and what they studied in university.

Exposure (3-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

-Present sentences from reading passage F on pg 61 in SB. -Ask SS: What did she love? What did she play? What did she want to be?

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

-Looking at sentences from part F on pg 61 of SB, ask students to call out the verbs. What tense are the verbs in?

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-Draw a timeline on the whiteboard and elicit from Ss where the past simple sentence falls on the timeline. -Introduce form: subj + v-ed, elicit from Ss what the subj and v. are. Do the same for negation and questions. -Pronunciation: Introduce past simple verb endings and their pronunciation. Examples: started, studied and worked -Listening: Ss fill in a chart with the correct pronunciation of past simple verb endings. Ss discuss answers in pairs/groups.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-Demonstrate how to play scrambled sentences. -Demonstrate chat box feature of Zoom. -Ss play a game with scrambled sentences. -They produce the correct answers in the chat box.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Flexi Stage: -Ss modify verbs to make past simple sentences. -Ss discuss answers in groups. -Ss discuss which sentences are true for them.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-T presents a picture of herself and a good friend. Explain that the friend cannot be seen now. -Present sentences about what we did together. -Present questions to students. After thinking about a good friend they no longer see, put them in pairs to discuss answers. -Ss present Ss to the class.
