Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed listening for definitions
  • To provide speaking activity for fluency in order to practice the target langauge

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will tell Ss that there will be a guessing game where students have to guess what the things for each definition is about. T will form three groups, give them the definitions, and ask them to make a guess in their own group and write down the answers on their paper. T will elicit the answers from the groups and write them on the WB as a WCFB.

Listening 1 (3-5 minutes) • To focus on the target language

T will give Ss a listening exe 1 and ask them to focus on the definitions to find the definition for each item from their childhood individually. Then a WCFB/

Test 1 (3-6 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

T will write "A mother is a person who cares for her children." on the board from the previous lesson, and write other five incomplete sentences and ask them in pairs to finish the two sentences definitions. "A key is a tool....." " A teacher is someone.....". " A wife is someone..." "A book is something....." "A watch is something......" .

Teach (7-10 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

T will ask Ss to do the grammar exe1 and answer questions 1,2,3 individually. After that, T will ask them to check in pairs and then do a WCFB. T will give after that a controlled exe from the work book exe1 to do individually, check in pairs, and a WCFB.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

T will write on the board the following sentences; a, A truant is a school pupil. He stays away from school without permission. b, A bib is a piece of cloth. It protects babies' clothes when they are eating. c, A dummy is a plastic object. You put in a baby's mouth to stop the baby crying. d, A nanny is a person. You employ to look after your children. T will ask the students to join each two sentences together using who or which. Ss do it individually, then they are asked to check in their grammar exe 2 and do it to find more about grammar.

Test 3 (3-6 minutes) • To practice joining sentences with relative clauses

T will give Ss a controlled practice from the work book exe 3 to join each two sentences with a relative clause. After that, Ss check in pairs and T will give the answers to them as a WCFB.

Free practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T will give Ss colored cards and ask them to write 5 words about people or things, and then in pairs define each word to let their partner guess the exact word. T will ask for some definitions as a WCFB
