Main Aims

  • To provide gist (first sentence) and detailed reading practice using a text about Couple found at sea & dog wins a lottery in the context of news stories

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of response to news in the context of news stories
  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about Couple found at sea & dog wins a lottery in the context of news stories

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start by showing Ss two news articles and ask them "what can you see? Two news stories" Have you heard about these stories in the lesson before? yes. To teach the word headlines, I will do it implicitly by asking them to tell me the headlines they can see on the screen. What are the headlines? Dog wins the lottery and a couple found at sea.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will ask students to match each of the given headlines with their proper pictures ICQs: Match the headlines with the pictures. What are you going to do? Match. Write the answers int he chatbox.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

For the first task, I will ask students to read the first sentence in each of the two stories and try to predict what is the story about. Students are going to do that in a breakout room for two minutes. ICQs: You are going to speak in........? English. You will think of one story or two stories? two stories. On the screen, The two headlines with the first sentence of each story will be screened and an exercise sheet will be sent. When they finish, I will elicit the ideas they have.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

I will show the students both stories and tell them that they are going to be two groups. (Group A-Green team) & (Group B- Blue group). Group A is going to read "Couple found at sea" and Group B is going to read "Dog wins lottery". Each group has different questions to solve. I will name the members of Group A and tell them which questions they will solve. And, I will name the members of Group B and tell them which questions they will solve. I will ask them to write their answers in a piece of paper or thier copybook. Then, I will send them to breakout rooms for 4 minutes. When they finish, I will divide them in which members of Group A get to be with members of Group B in one breakout room. I will model what they are going to do by asking one of each group about what they will do in the breakout room. When they get back I will elicit the answers in comparison with the model answer

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I will remind students of the stories they have heard of throughout the last lesson and this one. (four stories). I will point out that we are going to listen to four recordings about these four stories and they have to decide which story does each recording talking about. Again, I will model the first one. When they finish, I will ask them to write their answers int he chatbox.
