Materials

Abc Staging Powerpoint
Abc Speakout Upp-Int 2nd Ed. p35
Abc Paper or notebook

Main Aims

  • To expose learners to the target language and provide a chance to use the target language in controlled practice

Subsidiary Aims

  • To differentiate between written and spoken English

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Greet students as they arrive in the Zoom meeting. Start with the warmer question (What TV show or movie did you watch last? Pick 3 adjectives to describe it). Give them 1 minute to think of their answer and then call on students to tell the class their response.

Pre-teach (5-7 minutes) • To expose them to the target language

Play Golden Bell. Teacher will show students a scrambled word. Students will write their answer on a piece of paper and show it to their camera when the teacher says DING DING DING. Then the teacher will show them the correct spelling of the word and they can sell grade.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Show the students the word list. Ask them which words they know and don't know.

Exposure (12-16 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation; to consider the differences between spoken and written English

Students work in pairs and discuss the sentences (p35 ex1a), deciding whether they are written or spoken, and why. (3-4 min) Teacher shows answer key. (1 min) Teacher shows empty chart of Spoken and Written. Using Annotate, students will add differences between the two. (3-5 min) Brief discussion. (2 min) Students will use Annotate to write the correct vocabulary word next to the definition. (3-4 min)

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will complete a Quizizz quiz.

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In pairs, students will talk about their favorite TV series or movies using the vocabulary. After several minutes, students will provide feedback to the class about what they said.
