Main Aims

  • To provide practice in Reading for gist, particular information and details in the context of culture shock .

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice speaking in the same context.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

* I 'll say to ss " How are you today ? " * show the Ss the picture on the projector then I 'll ask them to think about it individually . * ask the Ss to check their ideas in pairs then discuss it with the whole class .

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

* set the video on the project and ask the Ss about what can they see ? . Then ask them what the meaning of culture shock and I 'll ask CCQs " Does it happen when a person moves to another cultural environment? Is it an unfamiliar way of life due to immigration or a visit to a new country ? Is it a transition to another type of life ? Then I 'll ask them " have you ever had culture shock ? " Then ask them to check in pairs then give the whole class feedback. *give the Ss the folded paper of the article and ask them to read ( E.X : b ) and ask them if there are difficult words in these four sentences . Then I 'll ask them to to open the part of the article only and bend the paper . *Ask the Ss to read the article and check true the sentence which says what the article is about ?

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

*give the Ss the folded paper of the article and ask them to read ( E.X : b ) and ask them if there are difficult words in these four sentences . Then I 'll ask them to to open the part of the article only and bend the paper . *Ask the Ss to read the article and check true the sentence which says what the article is about ? Then check in pairs and whole class feedback . *Give the Ss the matching handout ( match the word with it's definition ) and ask them to check in pairs then give them the feedback . * Ask the Ss to read the sentences in ( E.X : c ) then read the article again and mark the sentence T or F and correct the wrong sentences . Then ask them to check in pairs and give them feedback . * Ask ss to cover the text and complete the phrases with the missing verbs ( E.X : d ) then check in pairs and give feedback .

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

* Ask the Ss " are people in your country more like Miranda or Alexander ? why ? and ask them to write their notes individually then check in pairs and give whole class feedback.
