Description

In this lesson, students practice listening for specific information and to notice linking of words in the context of municipal transport problems. First they refresh their lexical set of common transportation means and associated verbs/usages, then listen to a news report about a transportation strike affecting citizens' daily commutes. They finish the receptive listening lesson with a productive speaking activity in which they give directions to friends about Istanbul.

Main Aims

  • To give Ss practice in listening for specific information and raise awareness of phonetic features of speech in the context of transportation and strikes.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To consolidate Ss’ lexis in the context of transportation. To give Ss practice speaking for fluency in the context of giving directions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To activate Ss schemata related to the TL by setting the context of transport and traffic.

Have ss rank cities for traffic from worst to best. Give real data as FB (TomTom 2013 Report). Ask Ss to discuss in pairs how they came to class today.

Pre-Listening -- Refreshing Lexis (8-9 minutes) • To test/consolidate Ss command of target lexical items related to transport, as well as their associated verbs.

Give Ss photos and have Ss work together to rank vehicles/means of transport by pollution on WB. When done, seat Ss and elicit words for photos. Model + Drill, then write, noting stress on multi-syllable words. Then divide class into two groups, give verbs on paper, and have them place verbs under associated transport vehicle (e.g., "cycle" under "bicycle", "drive" under "car"). CCQ differences between key verb uses - drive a car vs. ride a motorbike, fly a plane vs. fly on a plane, etc.

Listening #1 - (13-14 minutes) • To practice listening for specific information in the context of a transport strike.

Concept check present simple vs. present continuous using a timeline and two phrases related to the context. Show the story headline, asking Ss what it's about. Concept check "strike" as in transportation strike. Give Ss first handout and have them listen to audio (9.8) to fill in the blanks. Discuss with pairs then re-listen as needed. Having taken W/C FB on first task, give Ss second task to listen for specific information to answer questions. Give time to read questions 1-5, then play recording again. Ss listen and answer questions, comparing answers in pairs. Check W/C.

Listening #2 (7-8 minutes) • To practice listening for phonetic features of speech, specifically linking of words.

Now playing 9.9, have Ss listen for combined words in the sentences and notice the linking. Pause recording after each to take W/C FB on where they thought it was. Model and Drill, backchaining with fingers as needed.

Post-Listening -- Speaking to Give Directions (9-10 minutes) • To give Ss practice speaking for fluency using the TL in the context of giving directions.

Put name of place in Istanbul on back of each Ss; do not let them see. "It’s Sunday afternoon. You want to go to your favourite place in Istanbul with your best friends. Tell your partner where you want to go. Your partner will look at your back, which is where you are now. They will give you directions to where you want to go. Try to guess where you are." After mingling, take content FB and do delayed EC.
