Description

In this session the Ss are going to do a reading practice about the importance of the name given by parents to their children. Following they have a speaking part done in groups about their ideas on the topic.

Materials

Abc Handout of the book, reading text
Abc Handout of the book, new vocab
Abc hand out of names, pretask

Main Aims

  • The main aim is to get Ss engaged in a reading task, practsing skimming and scanning the text for general and specific ideas of the text

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide Ss with a speaking practice as a freer practice after the reading stage

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T starts the class with asking Ss about her name and if the Ss know what her name means, or whether they consider it as a suitable name or not. T will also ask some of the Ss TO Tlk about their names.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T gets Ss attention to the handout which they are going to work on, set the instructions and wants them to do a pair work to talk about the names on the handout and find what is funny about it. T gets the Ss to talk about their ideas WC. Next T wants them to guess what the topic is about. T will also pre-teach some words in this phase, and MFP of the words.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T gives a handout, gives the the instructions, checks ICQs and want the Ss to skim the text in 3 or minutes to answer questions in part one. T wants the Ss to check their answers in pairs and give feedback to the class.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T provides the Ss with another handout which is about the new vocabulary of the text. They should scan the text very quickly to match the words and definitions in front of them. T put the words and definitions on the board and one by one wants the Ss to come to the board and match the words and definitions that go together. If necessary, she will check the pronunciation of the words with class.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T gets the attention of the Ss on their handout, practice two, gives the instructions and wants the Ss to discuss the questions in their groups. T monitors them and takes note of any grammar o pronunciation mistake they make. T checks the answers WC and if there is any mistake T will write them on the board and gets the Ss to correct the sentences or check the pronunciation.
