Copy of TP6 - Urban Legends
Upper-Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, Ss will review what they know about past tenses and develop their skills on using the Past Perfect Simple and the Past Perfect Continuous in real life situations such as story telling. They will begin with a warm up about the context and a matching work of the vocabulary. Then they will read a text about urban legends and try to answer some questions using their prior knowledge. Then they will have some review practices and feedback. Finally they will have some freer speaking practices to see if they have improved well enough to use the grammar skills given accurately.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in conversations about urban legends

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (6-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss will be asked if they hear any made up story. Then Ss will watch “the Creepiest Urban Legends Ever Told” on YouTube. They need to find out about the legends mentioned and the grammar structures used. (4-5-min but can be kept shorter) Ss will discuss about what they found out. (1 minute or so)

Vocabulary (3-4 minutes) • To provide students some knowledge about phrasal verbs

Ss will be given match-work hand-out. They need to finish it in 2 minutes in their group. Then some will do the matching with A3 paper printouts on WB as FB in 1 minute or so. (3 minutes)

Test #1 (18-19 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Ss will be given 4 questions about the entrance of a text and they need to answer them in 4 minutes in group. They will check in pairs if they did correct. (5 minutes) Then Ss will discuss about the pictures A-B-C and try to tell the possible stories about them. (6 minutes) They will check their answers via Listening Ex.4.1 (2minutes) Then they’ll do a gap-fill (4-a on p31) about the Listening. They have 4 minutes to finish. They’ll have FB via Answer Key. (5-6 minutes)

Teach (4-5 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Sample questions below will be written on the WB, and Ss will be asked the following questions. TL needs to be highlighted in different colour, preferably red.(5 minutes or so) One day, one of the sailors went for a drive in the outback and accidentally ran over a kangaroo. - He went. Is it completed or not? While the sailor was taking some photos, the kangaroo came round. - Did “taking picture” take some time or not? Eventually the pilot of a Russian transport plane told the police what had happened. - Which one happened first? Something happened first, and pilot told the police. The boat had been sailing in calm waters when a cow fell from the sky. - Is the action in process before a cow fell, or after it?

Test #2 (3-4 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Ss will do another gap-fill (8 on p31) they will check their answers in pairs. (3-4 minutes)

Free practice (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss will work in pairs for activity 9 on p 31. Students As will be given the worksheet for p104. Students Bs will be given the worksheet for p107. First they need to write 10 words/phrases from the story as a reminder. (3-4 minutes) Then they will close the text and try to tell their partners urban legend in their own words with the words/phrases they’ve taken as notes. (4-6 minutes) If there’s extra time, ask students an urban legend they’ve heard in Turkey.
