Description

In this lesson,SS will be engaged in S focused speaking and listening skills by talking about meeting new people, keeping the conversation going and listening for the gist and specific information related to a conversation between some friends,and then after aims are completed ,work on productive skills with a role play conversation to practice intonation.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of meeting new people and keeping a conversation going

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide listening practice using a text about keeping a conversation going in the context of meeting new people

Procedure

Stage 1 (Warm Up) (5-6 minutes) • To provide some topics and and a controlled speaking practice

-Write the topics on the board My hometown Someone I met recently My studies/ university A holiday The weather in my country -Ask students to choose one and talk about it for one minute

Stage 2 (5-7 minutes) • To provide a controlled speaking activity by showing a picture and giving questions

-Show them the picture -Ask a couple of questions related to the picture -Ask students to discuss the questions and answer them in pairs. -Pass out HO's for SS to read the questions and answer FB Ask students what they learnt about each other.

Stage 3 (4-5 minutes) • To provide a listening practice for specific information

-Play the video -Ask them to watch the video and tick the topics that Grace and Hendrik talk about.

Stage 4 (4-5 minutes) • To provide a listening practice for specific information

-Ask them to watch the video again and match the auxilary questions in A with the phrases in B.

Stage 5 (5-6 minutes) • To provide a listening practice for focusing on intonation

-Ask them to watch the video again and repeat the auxilary questions and phrases. -Help them notice how the speakers use intonation to show interest.

Stage 6 (4-5 minutes) • To get studets to recognise the intonation,produce the target phrases and respond

- Show the papers one by one and ask them to repeat after you -Stick the papers on the whiteboard - Put them in pairs and tell them to take turns to read out the statements and show interest using the papers sticked on the board

Stage 7 (10-12 minutes) • to provide them with a variety of situations to encourage them to keep the conversation going by givig them .

- Tell them they is going to have a competition as pairs. - You have got 3 situtations - Choose one of them share your roles and start acting out -Try to keep the conversation as long as possible. - The pair who keeps the conversation longest and most productiveis going to be the winner.
