Description

This lesson is based on the daily routine of two real people with busy lives (Marjan Jahangiri is a professor of cardiac surgery in London). Her son, Darius, is in his last year of secondary school.)

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about Busy lives Mother in the context of Daily routine

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of medical lexis and other words from the text in the context of Daily routine

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- T greets Ss - T asks Ss to describe their daily routine? (in turns)

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Listening - Ss listen to sound effects from recording 4.7 - T pauses after each one for Ss to guess which one it is. - Ss then make their own sentences using phrases from 4.7 Pre-vocabulary - T models and drills the Glossary to Ss

While-Reading/Listening #1 (20-25 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

- T focuses on the title of the article "Busy lives Mother" Reading for gist "Jigsaw" - T asks Ss to read the introduction silently and individually in 2 mins - T asks questions about the introduction. - In paragraph 1 T sets Ss time limit and tell them to find out how they think Marjan feels at the end of the day. - T continues the same strategy until the last paragraph.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- If there is enough time for reading T tells Ss to scan the whole paragraph again and then answer questions from 1-8. in pairs - If there isn't enough time T moves to questions
