  • To provide gist and detailed reading reading activity followed by an expanded speaking regarding festivals and carnivals

  • To provide speaking activity about festivals and carnivals

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (7-9 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher shows some picture from the Rio and Venice carnival asks them where the event taking place eilicits the word carnival and asks them if they know any word(s) related to carnival asks students if they know anything about the festivals listed in the first speaking part.

Pre-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and clarify some of the keywords

Students match the word with pictures to clarify some of the key the words and compare their answers in peers and feedback.

While-Reading #1 (6-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students read the text and find out which of the words they match with pictures are not mentioned in the text, compare their answers, feedback

While-Reading #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students read the text again and fill the gaps with the sentences provided compare the answers and feedback.

Post-Reading (15-16 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students look at the email again find out what, "he" in line 3, "it" in line 8, "it" in line 11, "it" in line 13 and "us in line 20 refer to. students work in peers and feedback. As a final activity students answers the questions in the speaking parts and prepare to talk about a festival they have been to and speak to/report other students.
