Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of some adjectives to describe characters.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide deduction reading practice using a text about characters in the context of birthday party.


lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students.

1- Ask students some questions ( icqs) a- Are you easily fooled? b- Do you spend money on facilities? c- Did you take an important decision before? d- Do you hold your opinion ? e- Do you like talking much about yourself ? f- Do you care about the details? g- Are you hard to please ?

Reading (7-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students.

1- Tell the students they are going to read a text an give them the hand out ( HO1) 2- Ask them to put a title. 3- Accept any suitable title and praise them. 4- Ask them to discuss what they read in pairs. 5- Take feedback.

Language clarification ( MPF ) (15-20 minutes) • To clarify the meaning of the adjectives.

1-Ask students about new words they found . 2-Elicit these words ( gullible, tight-fisted, determined,obstinate, arrogant, meticulous,finicky) by writing on the board and defining them. 3- Ask students some questions CCQs after each word to make sure they understood. 4- Give them ( HO2) to match the adjectives with their meaning. 5- Monitor the students to see what is difficult for them. 6- Give them the answer key and ask them to discuss in pairs. 7- Ask them to tell me what the positive attributes and the negative attributes are.

Controlled practice( assessment ) (7-10 minutes) • To assess students’ understanding.

1-Ask students to write a short paragraph describing their partners using the adjectives they learned and how the partner would be ideal. 2- Help them by some introductory sentences. 3- Monitor them to make sure that they understood and collect their mistakes . 4- Make open discussion to give feedback.
