Copy of Copy of Past Simple & present simple perfect tense
B1 Intermediate level

Description

This material rounds off the lesson. In this lesson, students learn about the difference between past simple and present perfect through guided discovery based on a reading text about Narina Klein's travel weblog. The main aim of the lesson will be grammar where students will be taught via MFP. The sub-aim of the lesson is for the students to be able to speak for fluency using the present perfect tense to answer some questions based on an exercise from the book 'face2face Intermediate'. The lesson starts with eliciting 'never' through refering back to the reading from the previous lesson. This is followed by a practice where students work together to find time expressions in the text that are used for present perfect or past simple and write them in the correct columns drawn on the board, seperated as past simple and present perfect. This is followed by some controlled practice where students work together and choose the correct verb form. This is followed by an activity where students make a sentence about themselves using the expression on which the dice land on.Then, students are divided into 2 groups A&B to choose the correct verbs for the questions. Finally, Students are repaired to interview each other using the questions from the previous exercise.

Main Aims

  • Language focus: Grammar. to provide clarification between past simple and present perfect tense

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency using the present perfect tense

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • to get the student's attention to the topic that's going to be covered

- Ask students questions regarding a text they read in the previous lesson - Elicit the word 'never' in order to get them to recognize that this is a signal word for using the "present perfect" - Ask students to find examples in pairs for "past simple" and "present perfect" within the text they read in the previous lesson. - Get them to come up to the board and put the time expressions they have just found into columns drawn on the board.

Activity #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Cut up time expressions for both the "present perfect" and the "past simple" and have students organize the phrases , found on p 21,activity 2, in groups ( of 4) - Give them a handout including an answer key as a written record for them to check their answers themselves. - Ask students if they have any questions

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

- Put timelines on the board - explain once again which tense to use for a specific time and a period of time

Practice (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again

Give students some controlled practice in the TL, by doing ex 3. Students work in pairs to choose correct verb form. - Take w/c feedback , deal with questions

Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

- Have students arrange their cut- up pieces in circles on their tables and give previously created groups dices - Students move around the table the number of times the dice shows and end up on one certain expression - Have the student then form a sentence using the expression ( and the appropriate tense )

Fill-in-the-blank group activity (9-12 minutes) • to make student apply new grammar as well as communicate

- Divide students into A and B groups - Have them fill in blanks in exercise 3A - Give them answer keys ( found on several places in the classroom) - Have group A students as group B students questions from the exercise and vice versa
