In this lesson, Ss will have a receptive skill by practicing two sub skills of reading ( skim -scan). They will also be introduced to some words and expressions about 3 beaches descriptions. The context of the lesson is based on journey.

Main Aims

  • To practice skimming for the gist and scanning for more detailed information using a text about 3 Beaches in the context of journey

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of Location, describing places, fixed expressions. in the context of Journey


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students talk about themselves.

T will ask Ss to look at three photos of beaches on the board and ask them; " What do you think our topic about is going to be today?" After eliciting the topic, T will ask " Have you ever been to a beach like the ones in the photos?", "Which one would you most like to visit?" "Do you have similar beaches here in Turkey? T will ask them to tell their partner some beaches in Turkey to personalize the topic.

Pre-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To set the context and teach some new vocab

T will set the context of the reading and have some vocabulary on the board and ask the Ss if they know these words ( Lagoon, coral garden, dynamite, trawling nets, jungle, canopies ). Then T will provide an activity and ask Ss to match the words with the right pics letters in their group of 3. T will then elicit the answers and write the on the WB as a WCFB.

While-Reading (4-6 minutes) • To read the text for the gist

T will tell the Ss that they will read a short description about one of the photos of beaches and they have to skim and decide individually which of the photos is describes. once the finish, they check with their partner. T will limit the time for 1-2 minute. T will them "it's okay if you don't understand everything".

While-Reading (6-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading task

T will tell the Ss to read the same extract again more carefully to check if sentences (a,b,c,d,e,f,) true or false. T will ask them to work individually, as soon as they finish, T ask them to check in pairs and correct the false statements. T will elicit from the whole class by asking about some of their answers why they're false or true. After that, T will post the right answers on the wall in 4 places for Ss to check their own answers as a WCFB.

While-Reading (8-12 minutes) • Introduce some new vocabulary

T will ask Ss to read the new words in exe 3 p 69 to check their understanding and pronunciation. After that T will elicit the meaning of these words, and drill the difficult ones for pronunciation. Ss will do the task in exe 3 individually and then check with their partner. T will ask for some answers to check and then post the answers on the wall for a WCFB.

Post-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T will ask Ss to work in pairs to talk about places in their city or country which are (a,b,c,d,e,f). After they tell each other, T will ask for some answers as WCFB.
