TP 5 Renting a flat

Description

SS will learn how to ask questions using How much/ How many with countable and uncountable nouns, they will be exposed to the grammar by using guided discovery, and they will listen to a conversation between an estate agent and a client, which will lead to semi controlled speaking practice.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of How much , How many, in the context of Renting a flat

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of Renting a flat
  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about renting a flat

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T Reminds the ss about the advert they have seen in the previous lesson, T gives ss the ad asks them to work in pairs and answer the questions on the board: How many bedrooms are there in this flat ? what is( bedroom)? (noun) countable Is there a lot of furniture in this flat ? is furniture countable or uncountable? How much is the rent every month? T elicits some answers.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

T gives ss HO about How much/ How many. ss work individually and then check with their partners. T shows the answers on the WC. T puts ss in groups (3 or 4 )How much / how many/ countable/ uncountable T gives ss two cut up sentences with two questions, asks ss to put those two sentences in the right order to make 2 questions. T monitors and help. The group who finishes first reads the correct answers. T writes the two questions on the board. T drills the sentences.

Teach (7-10 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

T gives ss HO about the grammar, taken form the ss's book asks them to fill in the gaps with the right form. T asks ss to check with their partners, T elicits the answers, T writes the answers on the WB. T asks ss for some examples T starts eliciting the form of the question from the ss. How much is the rent ? T drills the form with intonations. How much is the water ? internet ...... How many bedrooms are there ?

Test #2 (7-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

T gives ss another HO about how many / how much, taken from the ss's book asks ss to work alone and finish it , Then asks ss to check with their partners. T elicits the correct answers and writes them on the WB.

Listening for gist (4-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening task.

T tells ss they will be listening to a conversation between Alex and an estate agent(reminds them of Alex and Martina) T elicits what is the estate agent? Is it a person? Does he sell or rent out flats? They need to put the things they talked about in the conversation in order. T asks ss to check with their partners. T gives HO with the right order.

Productive Task Freer practice. (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with freer practice of the target language

T changes the pairs. T tells ss that they will have a role play, one will be an estate agent and the other is someone who is looking for a flat to rent. T gives a handout with picture of the flat and the vocabulary they need to ask about. T monitors and writes any errors for the feedback. Error correction. T changes the roles and asks ss to do some more practice.
