Description

This lesson si based don practise of the past form of 'to be' (was/were) and 'can' for ability (could).A quick lead-in activity will set the students into context followed by an information gap activity. After that comes the grammar part followed by a controlled practice and a semi-controlled practice. the lesson ends with a bit of error corrections.

Main Aims

  • To practise can/could/was/were in the context of describing past ability.

Subsidiary Aims

  • to revise can for ability, to practice listening for specific information.

Procedure

Lead-in (2-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The lesson starts with displaying 2 pictures, one representing the Present and the other one representing the Past. The teacher is going to elicit the past form of the verb to be and the past form of ability (can). students will be asked about the age of the person on the picture, his ability to drive, swim, play with toys and if he speaks three languages. questions should be asked in the present and in the past.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with a context for the target language

Sets of words and a photocopy of the present and past activity will be provided for students. Students need to work in groups of four. after finishing the task, students in the same group will check on each other and do it in a group work, then the teacher will check their answers in groups and tell them if they are right or wrong.

Teach (8-10 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Teacher elicits from the students the past form of the verb to be. The teacher concept checks students'understanding through CCQs. Is it today or yesterday? Is it the past, present or future? etc.... The teacher needs to drill the pronounciation of was when it is contracted. The teacher writes down the right answers.

controlled practice (3-5 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

The teacher demonstrates Ex2 Page 47. Students need to listen and fill in the gaps. after the listening they can check their answers in pairs. Answer keys will be provided by the end of the activity in the corridoor so that students can check their answers.

Semi-controlled practice (10-15 minutes) • To concept check further practice of the target language

The teacher demonstrates carefully the activity. The teacher asks students to stand up and walk around the class and look for partners to practice one of the questions in the activity. Students walk around find partners and ask each other questions from Ex1 page 47 and answer them. The teacher will be monitoring and writting down some errors. by the end of the activity, the teacher will check the errors in a peer correction and if it is not possible to get the right answer, he moves to teacher correction
