Ss will also learn some introductory phrases through guided discovery based on a listening part.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about a couple talking at home in the context of "real world"

Subsidiary Aims

  • To present language through a text

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher starts off the lesson talking about what Ss were doing on the previous lesson. T says a few things which leads her talking to the below questions that she asks SS: Do you like having people round for a meal? Why?/ Why not? When was the last time people came to your home for a meal? Who came? What did you cook? Ss discuss the questions in GW T asks Ss to share interesting answers with the class.

Pre-Listening (8-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T asks Ss to focus on the photo (HO#1). T asks Ss below questions and elicit a few ideas - Who do you think these people are in the photo? - What do you think they are talking about? T tells SS that two people in the photo are Polly and Matt, who they heard discussing the roles of men and women in the previous lesson. T asks Ss to read the sentences (1-6) first and then play the recording. They tick the true ones and correct the false ones. Ss compare their answers with their partner and check the answers with the class.

While-Listening (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

T asks Ss to have a look at the sentences for the activity 2b and have them to read the sentences very quickly. Check the words "annoy" and "amaze" to see if the meaning of them is clear. T then asks them to fill in the gaps with one or two words while they are listening the recording again. Ss check their answers w their pairs and WCFB can be given.

Grammar Teaching (10-12 minutes) • To provide students the information that they need to guide them to discover the TL

T gives folded HO#2 to Ss and asks not to unfold them. Ss looks at the sentences on top of the page and answer the following questions first (CQs) They unfold the first bot of the page and complete the rule by circling the correct word. Finally the page is being unfolded totally and Ss complete the pattern with the missing words. In this way, Ss are being introduced to "introductory phrases" Ss goes back to ex.2b and practice the conversation by pretending Polly, Matt and then again Val and Tom.. T asks Ss to work in pairs and rewrite the sentences using the introductory phrases. At the end WCFB reveals the correct sentences.

Post-Reading/Listening (11-12 minutes) • to practice speaking for fluency

T asks Ss to write five things about people that they know by using the introductory phrases that they were give. Once they all have written, they can mingle around and tell each other about the people that they know. The most interesting thing about the people they know can be revealed at the end of the session.
