Description

In this lesson, ss will practice vocabulary of "Extreme and Dangerous sports" and ss will be exposed to the Target language through a text about “Extreme sports". The lesson starts with a discussion about extreme or dangerous sports, followed by pictures of the T doing some extreme jobs. Then, there are some vocabulary items to be taught. This is followed by the controlled practice, where ss match the sports with the correct photo. After that, the T will provide question forms, a set of adjectives and stating opinion to ss in order to prepare them for the speaking activity to describe their opinion about "which extreme sport would they rather try?Why? Why not, is extreme sports good to try even once or not” at the end of the lesson.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of "Extreme Sports" in the context of "Which extreme sport would you rather try?"

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of "which extreme sport would you rather try?"
  • To provide inference reading practice using a text about "Extreme Sports" in the context of "Adrenaline Rush"

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- T asks ss if they like sports or not. (T expects answer from 2 or 3 ss maximum). - T asks ss if they know about dangerous sports or not. (T expects yes/no answers, maybe ss will yes like x sport). - T shows the ss 2 pictures on the PowerPoint. (Personal photos of sky diving and hiking). - T asks ss to check in pairs if they would like to try some of these sports or not. (1 minute).

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a gist and specific information reading text

Ss will be asked to answer a question then, T or F. - T explains that ss need to get only the main idea and read quickly. - T gives ss one minute. - T asks the ss to answer the question. - T asks ss to check their answers together. - T asks ss to read again but check T or F. (2 minutes) - T asks ss to check their answers together. - Feedback is provided. (Projector)

Highlighting & Clarification (10-15 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

- T explains 5 new words that might be hard for ss. - The words are: "Motor biking, Caving, Bungee jumping, Mountain biking, Scuba diving, Rafting, Skiing, Sky diving, Snowboarding, Water skiing, Ice climbing and Parkour " - T follows the lexis analysis sheet.

Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

- T asks ss to fold their papers. - T answers the first one with them. - T asks ss to answer excercise a (HO2). - T gives ss (3 minutes) to answer. - T asks ss to check their answers in pairs. - T asks ss to unfold their papers.

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

- Demonstrate this task very carefully with one of the ss. (Nouran please DRILL THE QUESTIONS) - Open pairs, then, closed pairs. - Write the question form and keywords for expressing opinions on the white board. - Provide ready-made handout similar to the board in case time was short and also because some ss like to practice from paper. - Get ss to exchange pairs if necessary (Time). - T monitors and gives language feedback at the end.
