Description

In this lesson students learn about the past simple through guided discovery based on a reading about Travel and Holidays. The lesson starts with a lead in discussion about what they did last week? This is followed by a reading text about travel and then follows with explicit past simple affirmative, negative, interrogative paragraphs. Then there is a listening exercise for detail of places for travel. Finally there is a Pronunciation listening for the /t/, /d/, /Id/ sounds and in the flexible stage there is a discussion about past travel and holiday experiences.

Main Aims

  • At the end of the lesson students will be able to have clarification of the simple past tense in the context of Holidays & Travel.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a past holiday, travel experience in the context of travel and holiday

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will explain what she did last week, and turn and ask students the same question in order to engage them with the past simple structure. What did you do last week?

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students will listen a text about hot air balloons for exposure to the past simple tense, when finished they will answer the True or False comprehension questions. "Listen to the text and answer the questions, are they True or False?" When finished they will check with their partners as I elicit the answer on the board.

Highlighting (4-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Teacher will show the time lines prepared in the powerpoint file to highlight the simple past and usage with examples sentences. CCQ's will be asked in this stage as mentioned, i.e. They went to France in 1992. CCQ: Are they there now? (don't know)

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Teacher will elicit on the board example sentences for regular verb in past simple, highlighting the -ed suffix in red. I am planning to have a student write a second example on the board, for controlled practice.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will complete the mixed past simple questions on the reverse page of the worksheet by answering 9 past simple questions in affirmative, negative, interrogative forms.

Pronunciation (2-3 minutes) • Students to practice the regular verb past simple endings

Students will listen and practice the /t/,/d/,/Id/ sounds of the regular past simple verb endings. and answer 6 verbs sound endings. Teacher will drill the words for pronunciation.

Free Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In this stage students will ask each other to speak about their past holiday experiences with the provided questions. Depending on the quantity I am to have groups of 3 but if limited Ss available will let them do pair work.

Flexi Stage • Students can do further practice if time is left with a game

I will write the first 7 letters of the alphabet on the board and ask the students to complete each sentence starting from one with a verb and noun starting with the letter A, I will elicit the first sentence on the board: i.e. I ate an apple 2nd sentence starting with the letter B i.e. I blew a balloon and etc...
