Description

In this lesson, students will practise the skill of reading through the context of newspaper' headlines of various topics. This is followed by a controlled-practice in which students need to read the underlined words (from the headlines) to phrases that have the same meanings. Finally, students will listen to short radio news then match them with the right headlines. They will be given headlines to help them out writing radio news accordingly—based on what the have listened to.

Main Aims

  • In this lesson, students will mainly learn new lexical items through the context of newspapers' headlines. They will be introduced to new meanings in phrases by which they can understand and review reading/writing vocabulary.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will have listening practice as a receptive-skill to be improved after they have learned new vocabulary. They will improve their listening skills throug the context of radio stories.

Procedure

Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set the context by showing related pictures to the language area (vocabulary)

T will start by showing students picture of newspaper via the overhead projector. Leading to discussing newspapers and headlines and whether they read everyday-newspaper or not. They will move around the class, Feedback: T can elicit ideas

Pre-Vocabulary 1 (6-8 minutes) • To discuss related photos and activate students' prior knowledge

There will be three pictures from different online newspaper. In groups, students will move around class try to make a headline up for each picture pinned on the wall. Feedback: Elicit new words and write them up on the word, drilling if difficulty of pronunciation found.

Vocabulary 1 (8-10 minutes) • To review and teach new vocabulary related to the context of news

T will disucss the pictures and the headlines in the lesson and what ss could think about it. They need to match all photos with appropriate newspaper headlines. Feedback: Students will check in pairs, then wc feedback will be elicited.

Listening (5-9 minutes) • To improve listening skills through the context of radio news

T will ask students to listen to short radio newws and then match them with the given items. Feedback: Students check in pairs—they can listen twice if difficulty found. Elicit wc feedback after they have matched all items

Writing (8-12 minutes) • To practise writing short news story as a productive skill

In pairs, students will write short story for which new headlines are given as a context for the students to write about. Feedback: Teacher will monitor them while writing and give help with grammar if needed. To correct any potential errors if found to maintain accuracy.
