This is a reading and listening lesson. Students will practice reading for specific information and deducing meaning from context in the context of describing stress level.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show students a picture of a busy mom. Ask students to think about how this mom feels. Elicite the word 'stress' from the students. Is she busy? Yes Does she have a lot of things to do? Yes Is she happy? Not really Drill the word stress Students can work in groups to discuss what gives them stress. Feedback from class their answers

Pre-Reading (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Introduce Louisa and Simon. This is a British newspaper article about a typical or normal working day. Show picture and caption of Louisa. Ask students what the caption says? She is a single mother. What do you think that means? A single mother is a women who looks after her child or children alone without a partner. Drill Single mother Ask CCQs to make sure they understand: Is she married? No Does does anyone help her with her son? No Have students look at the picture and ask what is she riding on? a bike What do we call it when a person is riding their bike? cycle or cycling She is cycling (students repeat) Louisa cycles to her job at the National Gallery. She is a guide. What do you think a guide does? Get students answers A guide is a person that shows the way to people like tourist. Drill: She is a guide Ask CCQ's: Does she show people around the Gallery? Does she help people at the Gallery? Does she answer everyones questions? Does she help tourist? Yes

While-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To read for gist

Students will read about Louisas day alone 3-4 minutes Then they will discuss in groups about How stressed is she yes? Is she quite stressed? Very stressed?

While-Reading (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Students will read again about Louisas days. This time they will read slowly alone. ICQ's: Will you read slowly or fast? slowly When they finish reading I will demo the first question about Louisas day. Students will work alone to answer the questions Check on pairs I will give them an answer sheet Students will check the answers in groups I will them the answers

Pre-Listening/Listening #1 (5-10 minutes) • Students will listen for gist

Introduce Simon. What does he do? where is he? where does he live? where does he work? Brighton is 88 kilometers from London Students will listen to track 3.6 As you listen to him talk, put the correct number with the picture he is talking about. I will demo the first listening part. Students will answer alone to match Then they will check in pairs I will give them the answers

Listening #2 (5-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will listen to track 3.7 We will answer first question together Students will answer the rest in groups Give answers to check in groups
