Description

This is a lexis lesson. I will be teaching common adjectives and the two basic rules governing the position of adjectives. The context is a quiz about the USA. I will also be using an "Adjective Race" activity to practice the target language and a listening track to introduce how people do not separate words when they speak fast.

Materials

Abc Handouts, pictures and model answer sheets, listening track, white board and markers

Main Aims

  • In this lesson students will learn about adjectives in the context of describing places and things.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Practice using adjectives and nouns in a less controlled speaking activity.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-I will ask the students to name the things- food, clothes, films productions, films,roads,transportation- that are typically Egyptian vs things that are typically American. -Feedback their suggestions on the board

Test #1 (6-8 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Give the following instructions to the Ss while holding the paper to my chest. - Read from 1 to 8 and find the answer. The pictures will help you and exercise 1 a. Work in groups. Then, I am going to ask some ICQs: Are you going to work in groups or individually? Are we going to read only or read and write? what will help us find the answer? Then distribute the papers. -Ask one student to read number one , point to the picture that answers the question and refer to Ex 1 A. -I will read for them number two and try to elicit the answer from them . Point to the picture. Model the answer. Ask them to repeat after me all together then in groups and finally individually. Then, write the answer on the board. -Ask them to do the rest in groups. -Then,ask them to compare their answer to the model answer which will be to the back of their chairs.

Teach (12-15 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

-Ask the students to look at their answers again and ask them some CCQs: Is "house" a noun or a verb? What colour is the "house"? so which word describes the" house"? so what do call "white" an adjective or a noun? -Then elicit from them what an adjective is. -After that, I will demo the words "White House" and ask them to repeat all together then in groups then individually. - Finally I will write the word on the board. -Students do Ex 3 grammar individually and check in pairs, then show them the model answer on the board. -Then will give the students a short text to read (appendix 1) and underline all the adjectives then check their answers against the model answer which will be showed on the projector with the target language highlighted. -Instructions and ICQs will be given before distributing the papers. Listen to the audio track -I will focus on the REMEMBER instruction and the example sentence in the book. -Say it slowly separating the words. - -Ask them to repeat all together after me.Then, say it fast and ask them to repeat after me. -Ask them to listen to the audio an write what they listen to. -Pause after the second sentence and demo then, ask them to do the rest of the exercise, each one on their own.. -check in pairs. -Compare their answers to the model answer which they will find stuck to the board. -Then, drill all together then in groups and finally individually.

Test #2 (4-5 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Instructions: -Hold the paper to my chest -Tell the students they are going to underline the adjectives. Each one on their own. ICQs : Are you going to work in groups or alone? Are you going to write or underline? -Demo the first one then distribute the papers and ask them to do the rest. -Students answer Ex A p 127 individually, then check in groups. Then compare their answers to the model one at the back of the paper.

Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-Hold a picture to my chest - Ask Ss to make eight phrases for things in a picture -Demo the first phrase eliciting from them. -Ask them to do the rest in 3 minutes in groups. - Present to the rest of the class their phrases. -Ask every student to make an adjective/noun phrase about a different thing in the class.
