Past simple lesson and our solar system
Elementary level


In this lesson , students will know how to use past simple when they are narrating events happened to them in the past and finished. Through guided tasks ( by relying on listening and reading skills ) as watching videos about astronauts who traveled to space and they narrated what happened to them there, they will be able to reach the past of some verbs and differentiate between regular and irregular verbs. Then, by the end of the lesson they will be able to write a paragraph about their trip to the space by using the past simple.

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of the past simple in the context of journey to the space

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide process and product writing practice of a descriptive writing in the context of journey to the space


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will ask some questions about our space and the solar system. Then will ask students to watch a video about the space.

Pre-task (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

This is the pre-task stage in which Teacher will ask some provocative questions as, Have you ever visited the space? , Did you imagine that you went to the space and stayed there for many years? Then teacher will ask the students that they will be divided into groups and in their groups they will write about an imaginary trip to the space that they went to it before and they need to mention if they enjoyed it or not.

Task (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Teacher will divide the students into 4 groups and they will start their task about a journey they did to the space in the past. Teacher will say to them that this journey happened already so the writing will be in which tense. Teacher will elicit from them that they will use past simple tense.

Group discussion (6-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to plan students' reports

After all the groups finished their writing, Teacher will ask them to highlight in their groups the verbs that they used in their descriptive writing. Then they need to discuss together if they are correctly used in the past simple tense.

Language Analysis (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

Teacher will ask them after the group discussion, to choose presenters to write on the board the verbs that were used in their writing. Then He will ask provocative questions to elicit the form of the past simple tense by adding ed to form regular verbs and the irregular verbs how it was changed. He will let them pronounce each verb they used in their groups to make sure that they pronounced all of them correctly.

Post task (8-15 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the task language

Teacher will ask the students to hang the newspaper sheets in the class and make group correction. Each group will correct to another one, then to write down the mistakes and corrected them .
