To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about business icons
To provide practice of business collocations in the context of famous entrepreneurs' biographies
To exercise critical thinking based on the information provided in the text
To provide practice of language used for identifying similarities and differences
Procedure (40-51 minutes)
Names, nationalities and main areas of work of five business people are shown on the board. Students are asked to match the information with the names correctly in the shortest time possible. The first one to finish wins.
Teach business collocations some of which will appear in the texts.
Randomly group students into two groups and assign them a total of four texts. Having skimmed their texts, tell them to answer questions 1 and 2 only. Take class feedback.
Working closely with their group members, students answer more detailed comprehension questions. Then each student A is matched with one student B and complete the missing information by sharing the information they have about their texts.
(If time allows) Ask students to discuss the similarities and differences between the biographies they have read, and further discuss the content critically by answering the questions in exercise part 3.
