Description

In this lesson, students learn about reporting verbs and patterns through presentation practice production techniques in context about job responsabilities. Students will practice scan reading; they will develop their vocabulary; they will practice new grammar structures and speaking for accuracy in the last two free activities The lesson starts with scanning the text from the previous lesson: students identify reporting verbs & patterns. This is followed by a controled practice where students answer a number of questions and add the reporting verbs to the appropriate list od verbs. Next, students change the sentences in direct speech into reported speech, using reported verbs and patterns. Finally, students practice new language and speaking for accuracy, first in pairs and then in groups.

Main Aims

Procedure

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context, engage students and activate schemata

T asks sts to look back at the article and at the highlighted verbs. T elicits the meaning of all the reported verbs. T asks sts if those verbs have sth in common. While eliciting T uses WB to clarify the meaning of reporting verbs. T gives personalised example followed by object and infinitive form of the verb and elicits the form. T asks sts for more examples.

Exposure (3-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through scan reading.To introduce the form of reporting verbs and patterns.

T asks sts to scan the text and underline the verbs that follow the higlighted reporting verbs. They will also underline object if there are any. T gives example and highlights that verbs may be in different forms. T sets time limit of 1 minute and monitors. When they have finished they check their answers in pairs.

Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T aks sts to add the reporting verbs from the text to the appropriate list of verbs in the grammar box. T sets time limit of one minute and monitors. Sts work in pairs. In feedback, T shows the answers laid out in tables.

Highlighting and Clarification (3-5 minutes) • To highlight and clarify the meaning, the form and pronunciation of the target language

T uses the table from the previous stage to highlight and clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the reporting verbs and patterns. T highlights the different verb construction. T highlights the place of "not" in negative sentences. T asks CQs. (eg. Is the reporting verb mention followed ba an infinitive? Is the reporting verb offer followed by verb + -ing? Does not comes before the verb?

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T asks sts to do the exercise 2. They will change the sentences in direct speech into reported speech using verbs from the grammar box. T demonstrates by doing the first one herself. T sets time limit od 3 minutes and monitors. Sts work in pairs. When they have finished they check answers from the sheets placed around the classroom.

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language; to practice speaking for accuracy

T asks sts to do the exercise 3. Sts look back at the sentences they have changed to reported speech in exercise 2, and answer the questions. Sts work in groups. T demonstrates by answering the questions for the first sentence.

Optional Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language; to practice speaking for accuracy

T gives sts a topic to discuss (Jobs). Sts should listen carefully to each other and make notes. After a few minutes of conversation T splits up the groups and hands out a list of all reporting verbs from the lesson. Sts meet up in pairs or group of three with people from other groups. They must report what they heard other people say in the previous discussion. T demonstrates and asks CQs.
