Description

In this lesson, students learn new words through a short video titled " Mankind is no Island" which is based on a theme "empathy". The lesson goes on with a discussion about "empathy". This is followed by a short video where students watch and relate the visuals with the theme. Finally, there is some controlled practice and free practice via a final role-play speaking activity.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher gives them a presentation about empathy and prepares them for the short video. The teacher asks the students' opinions about the pictures in the presentation and the students tell what they think. : What do these images make you feel? : How do they make you feel? The teacher summarizes: 1. The first picture is about a woman who is homeless. 2. The second picture is about hunger. There are kids who struggle with hunger. 3. The cat is an earthquake victim that survived in the 2010 Elazığ earthquake. 4. The man is an earthquake victim who survived in the 1999 Düzce earthquake. 5. This is a disabled child who watches his friends from afar. 6. This image shows that we are all humans, our needs, our sadness, our pains are the same. The teacher starts eliciting the word "empathy" A friend of mine has just learned that her father has been diagnosed with cancer. When I want to share her pain what should I show towards her? Exposure (10-12 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

The teacher wants the students to watch the short video and after they finish watching the students will talk to their partners about the video. Instructions: 1. You will watch a video now. Try to understand what kind of messages are given here? 2. Now, think about what you have watched, what is it about, 3. And talk to your partner about it. How are you feeling right now? CCQs: 1. Are you going to try to find the themes given in the video? (Yes) 2. Are you going to talk to your partner about your opinions? (Yes) ICQs: 1. Are you going to talk to me? (no) - to our partners 2. Do you have 10 minutes to talk? (no)- 5 minutes. After the activity finishes, the teacher gets feedback from the students. : Can you tell us what she/he thinks about the video? How did she feel? After a brief conversation, the teacher continues by highlighting the new words.

Highlighting and Clarification (2-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language and to clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The teacher goes with showing the slides and drawing students' attention to the target words: homeless, Empathy, Empathize, pain, mankind.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The teacher wants students to write a paragraph about the topic. Instructions: Imagine that you are a homeless person. Write about how you became homeless and what a day in your life is like. You have 10 minutes. The teacher monitors the students closely and warns them if they make mistakes grammatically or lexically.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

In this part, the students will be semi-controlled by the teacher. Instructions: Now, please talk to your partner about your one day on the streets. You have 5 minutes. ICQ: What are you going to talk to your partner?- How much time do you have?- The teacher monitors them from a distance and takes notes. After they finish talking, if there are mistakes made by students, the teacher writes them on the board by showing the right forms.
