Description

This lesson reviews the Past Simple Tense briefly focusing on the irregular verbs. Students might have taken a look at Simple Past Tense before and this lesson continues in the same context as the previous lesson which is blog post texts. After this lesson students will have speaking exercises in the TL through some speaking activities in the following lesson.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with clarification, review and practice of simple past (irregular verbs – positive, negative and wh- questions) to talk about the past in the context of celebrations

Subsidiary Aims

  • To enable students practice the 'Wh' questions in past tense to to talk about themselves.
  • To provide clarification of Past Tense and irregular verbs in the context of Celebrations
  • To improve students' speaking skills using Past Tense and irregular verbs.

Procedure

Lead in (2 minutes) • To set the lesson's context and engage the students

Ask the Ss what they remember about the blogs they read in the previous lesson. Ask the students what time period are the text talking about? Past? Present? Future? Discuss in pairs for 2 minutes. Students discuss in pairs.

Focus on meaning of Past Simple in the context of the blog post texts from the previous lesson. (7-10 minutes) • To enable the students understand/ remember the use of Past Simple and introduce them to the past form of the verbs

T Refers the students back to the texts they read in the previous lesson and asks them to underline the verbs in the text. T Elicits the the verbs from the students and record them on the right side of the board. Students work together to underline the past verbs in the blog posts/ texts. Then they take turns to give feedback to the T. T clarifies the meaning using timeline and CCQs.

Clarifying the form of the Past Simple and Irregular verbs ( and regular verbs briefly) (7-10 minutes) • To enable the students see the difference between regular and irregular verbs in the past tense. To enable them to make out the forms(A, N, Q) of the Past Simple Tense

Students look at the past sentences in the texts again to to find some affirmative and negative sentences in the text. Teacher elicits the sentence examples from the students and ask the students to try to figure out the form of the past tense together. Elicits the ideas of students and writes the form of the Simple Past under the sentences already on the board. (A, N, Q) T underlines/ colors the the verb forms in the structures.

Written and spoken exercise in the TL (7-10 minutes) • To focus students on the past verbs and question forms in TL as well as their pronunciation through controlled exercises.

Students work together to fill in the blanks in Ss Book Ex. 2 and give whole class feedback to the teacher. Ss does the exercise 3 in the Ss Bk and make questions out of keywords and gives a w/c FB to the T. T monitors and notes down any error to be corrected later. T elicits the answers from the Ss and writes the questions on the board, has the students drill the questions and correct the pronunciation if necesssary.

Reading for specific information and improving fluency in TL (8-10 minutes) • to improve ss's reading fro specific information skills as well as giving them practice in TL using irregular verbs.

Ss make questions out of the keywords in exercise 4 in Pg. in Wk Bk. in groups of 4. Then they read the mini text Ex. 5 and note down the answers of the questions from the text. They take turns and whoever answers the question asks the next person the next question. T demonstrates the activity, monitors and notes down the errors for delayed language correction.

Delayed Language Feedback (3-5 minutes) • To draw Ss's attentions to some common mistakes and enable them the correct use of the TL

T writes the common mistes she had npted down on the WB and elicits the correct answers from the Ss. Ss engage and try to correct each other's mistakes.
