Description

In this lesson students will learn the past simple tense in the context of activities.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide students with the simple past and for students to be familiar with the simple past

Subsidiary Aims

  • For students to become familiar with positive and negative sentence formation in the simple past tense.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will ask students: 1. What are your favourite activities? 2. What sports do you enjoy? 3. How often do you do activities? 4. Which are popular in Turkey? Then elicit

Context (0-10 minutes) • Expose students to target language.

Teacher will clarify the meaning of the following words: Read - teacher will read a book and ask students what am i doing? Watch tv - draw a picture of someone watching tv and ask what am is the person doing? Spend time with family - explain to students going out with family members for example cinema, restaurant and theatre. Play sports - Teacher will act playing football go to the gym - Teacher will act doing exercise use the computer - Teacher will act using a computer go fishing - Teacher will act doing fishing go to the movies - Teacher will draw an image of people in the cinema

Clarification (0-10 minutes) • Teach the meaning of simple past

Teacher writes on the board: Did you work on Saturday? Yes, i did i worked all day. No i didn't. I didn't work at all. Did you go anywhere last weekend? Yes, i did i went to the movies. No i didn't. I didn't go anywhere. What did Tim do on Saturday? He stayed home and studied for a test. How did Meg spend her weekend? She went to a karaoke bar and sang with some friends. Write the past simple tenses in RED colour marker pen! Ask students what tenses are being used in the sentences and Elicit and explain to them what past simple is. FORM I explain the form of the above sentences i.e Did you work on Saturday? verb 2 +subject+infinitive+ preposition and explain the difference between questions, positive answers and negative answers ( use the sentence above on the board to illustrate this! Ask students to complete exercise 3A on page 45 and feed back answers. Pronunciation Get students to pronounce the above sentences correctly using the correct intonation. Teacher will give students gap fill exercise to do.

Freer practice (0-15 minutes) • Get students to form grammatically correct sentences using simple past tense.

Pair students and get students to write simple past questions and answer them using the form that was taught previously.

Feedback (0-5 minutes) • Error correction

Teacher writes on the board the errors he noticed while he was monitoring the students in freer practice and asks students why the sentences are incorrect and gets the students to say the correct answers.
